A rebound in basketball refers to the act of retrieving the ball after a missed field goal attempt (shot). When a player misses a shot, the ball often bounces off the rim or backboard. The players then attempt to grab the ball either in mid-air (an offensive or defensive rebound) or after it hits the ground.
There are two main types of rebounds:
1. Offensive Rebound: This occurs when a player from the shooting team grabs the ball after their own team misses a shot. It gives the team another opportunity to score.
2. Defensive Rebound: This occurs when a player from the defending team grabs the ball after the opposing team misses a shot. A defensive rebound allows the defending team to gain possession of the ball and start their offense.
Rebounds are a crucial part of basketball because they give teams extra scoring opportunities or prevent the other team from getting second-chance points. Players who are skilled at rebounding are often highly valued for their ability to control possession and help their team maintain or regain momentum.
