Unified Basketball is a special program designed to bring together individuals with and without intellectual disabilities to play basketball as teammates. The concept is part of the larger Unified Sports movement, which is organized by Special Olympics.
In Unified Basketball, players are paired into teams that include athletes with intellectual disabilities (called “athletes”) and those without (called “partners”). The goal is to promote inclusion, encourage teamwork, and foster social interaction through sport. These mixed teams practice together, play games, and compete against other unified teams.
The emphasis of Unified Basketball is not only on competition but also on breaking down stereotypes, promoting empathy, and creating meaningful friendships. It gives athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate in a mainstream sport setting, while also providing those without disabilities a chance to engage in an inclusive environment.
