what the shot clock in basketball

by liuqiyue

The shot clock in basketball is a timer that limits the amount of time a team has to take a shot. The primary purpose of the shot clock is to ensure a fast-paced and exciting game, preventing teams from holding the ball for too long without attempting to score.
In most professional basketball leagues, such as the NBA and FIBA, the shot clock is set to 24 seconds, meaning a team has 24 seconds to attempt a shot. If the team does not take a shot within that time frame, it results in a turnover and the opposing team gains possession of the ball.
The shot clock resets to a new 24-second count if the team successfully makes a field goal or if the ball hits the rim, which is known as an offensive rebound. If the shot attempt does not hit the rim, the clock resets to 14 seconds in the NBA. Different leagues and levels of play may have slightly different rules or shot clock durations.
